Utah Office of Education Comprehensive Guidance  Program

The Utah State Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance program has adopted and implemented in all middle and high schools within the district.  In this model, counselors spend 80% of their time providing a pro-active program to 100% of the student body.

As students move through the school system, counselors help them gain competencies in the areas of self-awareness, educational and occupational exploration, and career preparation.  Skills and information developed in these areas are used to create individual Student Education Plans (SEPs) or Student Education Occupation Plans (SEOPs).  These plans are used to recognize student accomplishments and strengths, and to plan and monitor education and career development.  Students leave school with the skills, information, training and experiences to pursue their life and career goals.

With comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Programs, counselors:
• impact all students in a powerful and effective way as to the importanceof career decision making and planning for life after high school;
• encourage and assist each student in developing a SEP or SEOP;
• provide opportunities for student growth in the areas of self knowledge, educational and occupational exploration and career development; and
• involve the school, the home and the community.
