Career & Technical Education - Wasatch Front Consortium

Work-based Learning (WBL)
Work-Based Learning is career awareness, exploration, work experience, structured training and/or mentoring at the work-site.  It provides students with opportunities to apply complex subject matter while learning vital workplace skills in a “real life” environment.  Students are able to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom to real tasks performed in the workplace.  As students see the connection between their school work and what is required in various occupations, they better understand the importance of learning and can make better decisions for their future.

There are Work-Based Learning activities appropriate for every grade level that supports students in developing career awareness, exploring career options, developing appropriate workplace skills, and relating academic skills to real-world applications.  These activities may include but are not limited to:

Career Fairs                                    Job Shadows
Cooperative Work Experiences   Internships
Field Studies                                   Externships/Clinicals
Guest Speakers                             Apprenticeships
Informational Interviews               Service Learning/Volunteer Work
